COSME project: Greenways Heritage
The province of Antwerp is partner in the European COSMEproject: Greenways Heritage. Development and promotion of a transnational cultural tourism product linked to greenways and UNESCO cultural sites. Lead partner is the EGWA (European Greenway Association).
Greenways are communication routes reserved exclusively for non-motorised journeys. Canal towpaths and disused railway lines are a highly suitable resource for the development of greenways. Lille Declaration, 12 September 2000
The aim of the project is to promote UNESCO and other heritage sites near greenways as a fundamental and characterizing part of them, thereby developing a new tourism product combining the two resources.
The Province of Antwerp and the city of Mechelen are responsible for the development of an app, a 360° virtual experience of important heritage alongside the rivers connecting the city of Mechelen to the Rupel area.

Riviercruises and the niche market of the bike-boathotels: a new potential for the Flemish waterways in green area’s?
The province of Antwerp has made a report on the actual state of small river cruises in Flanders. The aim of the report is to prove that river cruises are more and more in demand and that Flanders has to invest the next policy period in facilitating the development of river cruise packages.
3 Students of the Faculty for Economics and Business are researching
- the potential for new business models for cruise shipping companies and tourism business partners on land
- the potential for new tourism products for small river cruises: especially for boat bike tours
- selecting the best routes and mooring places
The report of the students is to be expected end of May 2019
